Minnesota Orthodontist Continues Community Involvement
Zapfel Orthodontics is proud to be involved in the local community. Last year we collected food and household/school supplies for a local community shelter for women and children. We also did a Halloween candy exchange and sent our collections as care packages to our overseas troops.
Do you have any ideas for ways that Zapfel Orthodontics can be involved in the community? We’re always looking for causes that are meaningful to our patients. Feel free to make a suggestion next time you stop by the office!

Retainer Tales
Summer is here, and for many people, this is the most active time of year. If you have retainers, be extra careful to keep track of them this busy season! Here are some of the most common reasons why people need new retainers, and some tips on how to avoid these retainer casualties:
- The dog or cat ate the retainer. Keep your retainer in its case anytime it’s not in your mouth!
- The waiter/waitress threw away a retainer that was wrapped in a napkin. Once again, keep your retainer in the case!
- The retainer doesn’t fit anymore. Make sure you wear your retainers as prescribed. Often, the reason a retainer doesn’t fit is because the retainer isn’t worn enough.
- The retainer fell out while swimming. Don’t wear your retainers in the pool or lake! It is especially difficult to find a clear retainer if it falls out in the water.
If you do happen to break or lose your retainer, be sure to call Zapfel Orthodontics right away to get a new impression made before your teeth shift around. Retainers are generally made to hold the teeth where they are, so if you experience shifting, a retainer may not be able to re-correct your bite.

Tongue Thrust Habit Explained
“Tongue thrust” is the habit of resting the tongue against or between the teeth. It can be caused or affected by a number of different things, including thumb or finger sucking habits, structural or developmental problems, or mouth breathing. This habit can sometimes cause the teeth to move into an unfavorable position, which makes it difficult for the orthodontist to correct a bad bite, or to keep a bad bite corrected.
Treatment for tongue thrust can range from increasing the patient’s awareness of tongue posture to undergoing myofunctional therapy to tone the muscles and establish a new habit with the correct tongue posture. Generally speaking, it is best to treat the habit at a young age to prevent more serious side effects, and also to allow for the best long-term stability. Changing a habit takes time and effort! We here at Zapfel Orthodontics are here to support you along the way, and to ensure that you achieve your best bite.

Minnesota Orthodontist Always Working Toward Perfection
Summer is here! For most kids, summer means a break from school. We feel that our patients deserve the best, so for Zapfel Orthodontics, there is never a break in our quest to be the best we can possibly be. In order to keep on top of the most recent developments in orthodontics, we are sure to meet and exceed the Minnesota Board of Dentistry required continuing education requirements. We have regular staff meetings and training updates and we attend local, regional and national meetings when possible. Since technology changes so rapidly, it is important not be wooed by the “newest, latest, and greatest”. Zapfel Orthodontics is conscious about evidence based dentistry (EBD) and only uses techniques that have been proven in studies to be efficient and effective.

Twin Cities Orthodontist Discusses Phase I Treatment
For many people, there is a specific “window of opportunity” for correcting a bite problem. If this window of opportunity is not taken advantage of, the bite problem can worsen and become more complex. This sometimes results in the need to remove permanent teeth, or in severe cases, do jaw surgery.
At Zapfel Orthodontics, we believe that there are certain types of bites that benefit from early treatment, or Phase I. Early bite correction generally addresses and/or prevents jaw growth problems. Later on, usually once all the baby teeth are gone and the permanent teeth have erupted, the child undergoes Phase II, or “regular” braces. Most patients, even those who have had Phase I, benefit from the bite detailing included in Phase II.
So how do you know if your child can benefit from an early phase of orthodontic treatment? The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that every child be seen for an initial evaluation by an orthodontist by the age of 7. This allows the orthodontist to evaluate the growth pattern and tooth eruption sequence of young patients, while at the same time keeping the “window of opportunity” open in case the child needs pre-braces growth guidance.
